AT&T CEO Predicts Fiber’s Dominance in Future Internet Connectivity

AT&T is intensifying its focus on fiber optics, with expectations of significantly enhancing its fiber network by the end of the decade. During the Analyst & Investor Day, CEO John Stankey emphasized the superior capabilities of fiber, which include improved upload and download speeds, reduced latency, increased scalability, and lower costs. He anticipates that fiber will ultimately be at the forefront of internet connectivity.

AT&T’s ambitious plan involves expanding its fiber network to reach 50 million locations by the end of 2029, with an increase from 29 million by 2024. This growth strategy involves not just AT&T’s direct fiber construction but also partnerships, notably with Gigapower, coupled with the involvement of investment firm BlackRock. The goal of Gigapower is to build a commercial open-access fiber network, which will add at least 1.5 million locations, with AT&T being the prime client. While fiber is expected to dominate, Stankey acknowledges the role of satellite internet, such as Starlink, in catering to unique needs, especially in remote areas.
